FAA Approves Frasca MentorTM as Advanced ATD

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved Frasca International’s new MentorTM device as an Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD).  As an AATD, the MentorTM can be used for satisfying tasks, maneuvers and procedures under select sections of Federal Regulations for parts 61 and 141. The MentorTM can be used for a maximum of 20 hours toward the instrument rating, 2.5 hours towards the Private Pilot Certificate, 50 hours towards a Commercial Certificate and 25 hours towards the Airline Transport Pilot’s Certificate (ATP).

The MentorTM can also be used for instrument proficiency checks (per FAA-S-8081-4) and special training curricula such as the Garmin G1000  "glass panel" training program offered by Frasca customer, Vectair USA . The program is based on F.I.T.S. (FAA Industry Training Standards) guidelines and is a scenario based program requiring students to manage various resources and make decisions while flying the highly advanced "glass" cockpits of today's aircraft.

The Frasca MentorTM is capable of training pilots to fly integrated avionics systems such as the new Garmin G1000 or Avidyne Entegra as well as conventional instrumentation without investing in more advanced FTDs. While compact in size, the MentorTM is a high quality simulator with an extensive features list and uses much of the same technology as Frasca’s higher level FTDs and FFSs.

Standard features for the MentorTM include an FAA approved flight data package, Jeppeson Nav data, full size flight controls including rudder pedals and brakes, conventional instrumentation, Avidyne Entegra or Garmin G1000, Graphical Instructors Station (GISt), multi-channel sound simulation, and TruVisionTM visual system with optional visual display systems.

The Mentor can fill a wide range of training requirements. For smaller schools, it can serve as the schools only simulator and will provide high quality simulation for flight training.  Larger schools will find the Mentor performs best as Part Task Trainer complimenting Frasca's TruFlite and Level 6 Flight Training devices.  Such schools would use a mix of devices, Mentors for navigation training, the TruFliteTM for aircraft familiarization, VFR training, and more, and Level 6 FTD's which allow schools to expand simulator credit under part 142.
